My favorite holiday memory stems from the time when my mother was alive. She was big on tradition so the celebration was always at our house. She always had to have a real tree, never artificial with all the garlands and bulbs and an angel on the top. The meals were always lavish – from the golden brown butterball turkey to candied yams with marshmallow to minced onions. The preparation of the meal was a two day event. The partial cooking of the ham and turkey the night before as well as the making of the pies.

All the presents jammed packed the living room-having a large family you made out very well with receiving gifts. After gifts were exchanged they would be placed back under the tree until the day after New Years’. We received stockings still as adults with nuts and raisins and candy and a small personalized gift. All the cousins and aunts and uncles and friends of the family would take turns visiting and eating and exchanging gifts.

It has been ten years since my mother passed away but I try to recreate and uphold the family tradition. Holiday is for family but I miss the days when my mom was alive.

Her memory stays in my heart and warms my soul on this special holiday.
